Rate sources and how the calculator works
South African rates
Salary presets are advertised monthly cost-to-company ranges from Pnet’s 2026 Salary Guide, pages 7–11. They are national reference ranges; experience and location matter. Enter the employer’s actual CTC when known.
The engineering client-rate range is derived from the consulting-engineer salary range using ECSA’s 2025 fee guideline, §4.4.3, category C: R0.175/hour per R100 or part of annual employment cost. It is a reference for consulting engineering, excluding VAT, and is not a software rate survey. Other professions should enter their actual charge rate.

A scenario you can change
Annual task time = hours per person × people × working periods. Salary hourly cost = annual CTC ÷ (40 hours × working weeks). Client mode values time at your charge rate.
Recovered value = task value × automation percentage. Cash benefit then applies your cash-realisation percentage and, for client work, contribution margin. Running costs are deducted; the build budget is deducted once at the start. The 12-month budget is the first year’s cash benefit less running costs.
Positive net cash first recovers the build outlay. The remaining balance earns the chosen effective annual return, converted to a monthly rate, before each month-end contribution. Annual growth applies equally to benefit and running costs. Payback uses cash flows before investment returns.
Nominal rand over five years, with immediate operation and constant task volume. Taxes, VAT, investment fees, inflation adjustment, delivery delay and failure risk are excluded. Capacity and billable opportunity are not guaranteed cash savings. A 100% automation setting is a challenge to validate, not a feasibility promise.
